In this guide

Ephesus is the best-preserved classical city in the Mediterranean, and the difference between a great visit and a shuffling one comes down to three decisions: which gate, what time, and whether you pay the extra 15 euros inside. Enter at the Upper Gate at opening, walk downhill to the Library of Celsus, and buy the Terrace Houses ticket with your entry. This ephesus travel guide covers the 2026 prices, the two-gate logistics, what to look at, and where to sleep.

Key Takeaways

  • Entry costs 40 euros including the Experience Museum; the Terrace Houses add 15 euros and no pass covers them.
  • Enter at the Upper Gate at 08:00, walk downhill to the Lower Gate, and beat the 09:30 cruise wave.
  • Pay by Visa or Mastercard. Euro cash is refused at state ticket offices.
  • Selcuk, 3 km away, is the best base for an early start; Kusadasi suits beach-and-ruins mixes.
  • Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for the ruins plus 45 to 60 minutes for the Terrace Houses.

Which gate should you enter, and when?

The Upper (Magnesia) Gate, then downhill. Nearly every tour bus does this route for a reason: the 1.5 to 2.4 km walk descends through the Odeon and Curetes Street toward the Library of Celsus, saving the famous facade for the second half. The Lower Gate reverses it: you meet the Library and the theatre first, then climb against the flow of every group (Catching Auroras 2026).

Time beats everything. The site opens daily at 08:00 and cruise buses from Kusadasi, 20 km away, flood the marble streets from about 09:30 to 11:30. An 08:00 arrival buys nearly two quiet hours; after 16:00 works as the fallback. In summer 2026 the illuminated ruins also open Wednesday to Saturday evenings, 19:00 to 23:00, on standard 40-euro admission via the Lower Gate (Ephesus Tickets).

Settle the exit before entering. No shuttle connects the gates, dolmus runs serve only the Lower Gate, and drivers waiting there charge up to 40 euros for the five-minute hop back to a car left uphill. Arrange pickup at the Lower Gate in advance, or budget the dolmus back to Selcuk. There is almost no shade inside, marble turns slick when wet, and water points are scarce: hat, sunscreen, grip shoes and a full bottle are not optional in summer.

What does it cost, and is the Terrace Houses ticket worth it?

Entry is 40 euros per adult in 2026, set by the ministry in euros and charged in lira at the daily rate. The ticket bundles the new Experience Museum at the Lower Gate. Children 8 and under go free, with a passport as proof (Tours Around Turkey).

Terrace Houses are seven wealthy Roman villas built into the slope above Curetes Street, roofed over, threaded with glass walkways above original mosaics, frescoes and marble. Every experienced guide says the same thing: the best 15 euros in Ephesus, plus shade on a hot day. Buy the ticket with your entry, since the booth stands inside the site partway along the route (Ephesus Guide).

Pass maths stays simple here. Museum Pass Turkiye (165 euros, 15 days) and Museum Pass Aegean (95 euros, 7 days) both cover the 40-euro entry but never the Terrace Houses. An Ephesus-only day totals 40 plus 15 plus the Selcuk museum (10) plus St John (6): 71 euros, below even the Aegean pass. Buy a pass for a multi-region trip, not for Ephesus alone.

What should you actually look at inside?

Walk the spine: State Agora and Odeon near the top, Curetes Street with the Temple of Hadrian and the public latrines, the Terrace Houses halfway, then the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre at the bottom. The Library facade, rebuilt from its fragments, photographs best before 10:00 when the light hits it straight. The theatre held the city’s mass meetings; stand on the orchestra floor and feel the scale before climbing for the harbour-view panorama.

Give the ruins 2.5 to 3 hours and the Terrace Houses 45 to 60 minutes. Skip the audio-guide shuffle only if you read the boards; otherwise the official audio or a licensed private guide (ask for ministry credentials, unlicensed guiding is illegal) repays the cost for history-minded visitors. Wheelchair users should know the route runs 75% navigable on gravel and walkways with companions, but the Terrace Houses are stairs-only.

Where should you base yourself?

Selcuk for the ruins, Kusadasi for the mix, Izmir for the flight. Selcuk sits 3 km out: the Lower Gate is a 35 to 40 minute flat walk or a short dolmus ride, the town is quiet and walkable, and you hold the 08:00 advantage every morning. Its own half day fills easily: the archaeology museum, St John’s hilltop basilica, the single column of Artemis, and the hillside village of Sirince for fruit wines (parking 100 to 150 lira).

Kusadasi, 20 km west, serves cruise stopovers and beach days. Dolmus reach Selcuk every 30 minutes for about 50 lira, private taxis cost 400 to 500 lira one way, and return-taxi day trips from the port run 80 to 120 euros. From Izmir, 80 km north, the IZBAN commuter train runs from the airport station to Selcuk in 55 to 100 minutes for 50 to 80 lira; airport taxis to Selcuk cost 45 to 70 euros (Ephesus Guide).

The cavea and orchestra of the theatre with the hills behind

The theatre at Ephesus. Morning visits catch it empty; by 10:00 the cruise groups arrive.

Pair Ephesus with Istanbul by air into Izmir, and shape the wider loop through the Turkey hub: itineraries for the 7 and 10-day routes, food for the Aegean table, budget for the full maths, and tips for visas and transport. One last rule: eat in Selcuk before or after, never inside the gates. Nothing is sold past the ticket office except the view.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Ephesus cost in 2026?

Entry is 40 euros per adult including the Experience Museum, and the Terrace Houses inside add 15 euros, so budget 55 for both. Children 8 and under enter free with a passport as proof. The Selcuk museum (10 euros), St John's Basilica (6) and the Temple of Artemis (free) are separate.

Are the Terrace Houses worth the extra ticket?

Yes. They are seven wealthy Roman villas under a protective roof, with mosaics, frescoes and marble you walk over on glass walkways, plus shade on hot days. Guides call it the best 15 euros in Ephesus. Allow 45 to 60 minutes inside.

Which gate should you enter Ephesus from?

The Upper (Magnesia) Gate, then walk downhill 1.5 to 2.4 km to the Lower Gate. It is easier on the legs and builds toward the Library of Celsus. Fix your exit transport first: there is no shuttle between gates, and Lower Gate taxis charge up to 40 euros for the 5-minute return drive.

How do you avoid the cruise crowds at Ephesus?

Arrive at the 08:00 opening. Cruise buses from Kusadasi fill the marble streets from about 09:30 to 11:30. Alternatively come after 16:00, or visit on a summer Wednesday to Saturday evening when the illuminated ruins open 19:00 to 23:00.

Should you stay in Selcuk or Kusadasi?

Selcuk if Ephesus is the priority: 3 km away, walkable to the Lower Gate, quiet at night, and first in line at opening. Kusadasi if the trip mixes ruins with beach days and cruise logistics, 20 km away with constant dolmus connections.

Can you pay in euros at Ephesus?

No. Prices display in euros but ticket offices accept only Turkish lira cash or Visa and Mastercard, converted at the daily rate. American Express generally fails, so carry a backup card.
