In this guide

Krabi is the limestone coast of southern Thailand: cliff-walled beaches, longtail boats and more than a hundred islands offshore. Base yourself in Ao Nang for four to five days between November and April, ride the 100-baht longtail to boat-only Railay, book one island tour, and keep a day for the mainland temples and pools. This guide covers where to stay, how the boats work, what the tours cost and how to reach Phi Phi, with 2026 prices throughout.

How many days do you need in Krabi?

Four full days hits the right pace. Give Railay one day, the 4-islands tour the next, and the Tiger Cave Temple plus Emerald Pool a third. The fourth day is your buffer: a second tour to Hong Island, a slow beach morning in Ao Nang, or a Phi Phi day trip. For example, if monsoon swell cancels your 4-islands sailing on day two, the spare day lets you rebook instead of losing the trip highlight. Krabi slots neatly into a two-week Thailand itinerary between Bangkok and the islands further south.

Three days works if Krabi is one stop among several. Pick Railay plus one island tour and skip the inland day, or skip the tour and do Railay plus the mainland sights. Two days feels rushed because nearly every highlight depends on a boat or a drive, and one cancelled sailing can eat half your plan.

Where should you stay: Ao Nang, Railay or Krabi Town?

Krabi is a province, not one town, so your base decides how each day starts. Most first-timers sleep in Ao Nang. Prices below are typical 2026 walk-up ranges; our Thailand trip cost breakdown puts them in national context.

AreaBest forKeep in mind
Ao NangFirst visits, restaurants, tour pickups, longtails to RailayBusy strip; the beach itself is ordinary
RailayCliff scenery, climbing, a car-free beach stayBoat access only; pricier rooms, fewer ATMs
Krabi TownCheap rooms, local food, weekend night marketNo beach; a 30-minute ride from the boats
Klong Muang and TubkaekQuiet resort beaches north of Ao NangYou arrange transfers for almost everything

Ao Nang is the practical default. Tour desks sell every island trip, and the longtails to Railay leave straight off the beach. Evenings centre on the beach road restaurants and the Ao Nang Landmark Night Market. The trade-off is that central Ao Nang beach is pleasant rather than special; you sleep here for access, not for the sand.

Railay suits two or three nights mid-trip rather than a whole week. The peninsula has no roads and no cars, four small beaches, climbing shops and a slow evening scene. Rooms cost more than equal quality in Ao Nang, and you carry luggage onto a longtail to arrive.

Krabi Town suits budget travellers and food-first visitors. Rooms run well below Ao Nang rates, the riverside promenade is good for a morning walk, and the weekend Walking Street market is a genuine local evening out. The catch is distance: the town sits about 20 km from Ao Nang, so every beach or island day starts with a songthaew ride of around 60 baht.

How do you reach Railay Beach?

There is no road to Railay, in any season. Limestone cliffs seal off the peninsula, so the longtail boat is not the scenic option but the only one. From the south end of Ao Nang beach, shared longtails cost 100 baht one way (200 baht return) in 2026, and the crossing takes 10 to 15 minutes (fare and timetable guide). Boats run roughly 8am to 6pm and leave once full, usually about eight passengers, so outside morning peak you may wait 15 minutes on the sand.

From Ao Nam Mao pier, on the Krabi Town side, the same crossing costs about 150 baht and suits arrivals from the airport direction. From Krabi Town itself the ride is longer, around 30 to 45 minutes, and costs from 150 baht. After 6pm the shared service stops and you charter a private boat, roughly 600 to 800 baht for the whole boat, so plan day trips back before dark.

On Railay itself, everything is on foot. West Railay has the sunset swimming beach, East Railay is a mangrove shore with the cliff paths, and Phra Nang Cave Beach at the southern tip has the princess-spirit shrine inside its cave. The lagoon viewpoint trail between them is steep and muddy after rain; wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops.

Which island tour should you book?

The 4-islands, Hong and Phi Phi trips are three different days out, and mixing them up is the easiest way to book the wrong boat. If you take one tour, make it the 4-islands: it is the cheapest, the shortest crossing, and the classic Krabi seascape.

The 4-islands tour loops Chicken Island with its rock formation, Koh Poda, Tup Island and Phra Nang Cave Beach. Its signature moment is the Talay Waek sandbar between Tup and its neighbours, which you can walk across at low tide, so departure time matters as much as the season. In 2026 a shared longtail tour costs about 500 to 800 baht per person and a shared speedboat about 1,000 to 1,600 baht, usually with lunch, snorkelling gear and Ao Nang pickup included (2026 tour prices). Longtail is cheaper and closer to the water; speedboat buys more time per island and a steadier ride if you get seasick.

On top of the tour price, every passenger pays the Mu Ko Poda national park fee of about 400 baht per adult (200 baht per child) in cash. Park rules forbid bundling it into the ticket, so no legitimate operator advertises it as included. Your guide collects it at the start of the day, so bring small notes. Full-day tours run roughly 8am to 3pm.

The Hong Island tour heads to a separate lagoon-and-cliff cluster with a viewpoint, and it pairs well with mangrove kayaking near Ao Thalane. Crossings are longer and usually need a speedboat, which pushes the price above the 4-islands trip. Pick Hong for quieter scenery and paddling rather than another beach stop.

Phi Phi is its own archipelago and a bigger commitment: a full day on the water with Maya Bay, Bamboo Island and Phi Phi Don. If the budget stretches, an overnight on Phi Phi Don beats the rushed round trip, since you see Maya Bay early before the day boats arrive.

What should you see on the Krabi mainland?

When the sea turns rough or you want a day off the water, the mainland delivers the two best inland stops in the province plus the best evening market.

Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)

The temple sits about 9 km from Krabi Town and 23 km from Ao Nang. Its draw is a staircase of about 1,260 steps climbing roughly 300 metres to a hilltop platform with a large golden Buddha (2026 temple guide). The old base sign still reads 1,237, a count from before a rebuilt section, so both numbers circulate; either way it is a steep continuous climb. Most people take 30 to 60 minutes up, longer in heat, since the stairs have almost no shade and some risers top a foot high.

Entry to the grounds is free, with donation boxes funding the stairs and buildings. Go at sunrise or late afternoon, carry at least a litre of water, and cover shoulders and knees since this is an active temple. Watch your bag around the macaques on the lower steps; they snatch bottles.

Emerald Pool and Blue Pool

Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, sits inside the Thung Teao forest about 55 to 60 km from Krabi Town, roughly an hour by road. Foreign adults pay 400 baht (200 baht for children) in 2026, cash at the gate, and the park opens about 8:30am to 5pm (2026 pool guide). An 800-metre shortcut or a 1.4 km forest boardwalk leads to the turquoise pool, the only one where swimming is allowed.

The nearby Blue Pool is viewing only, and it closes to visitors from May to October to protect nesting birds, so check before combining the two. Arrive before 9am on a weekday to swim before the tour minibuses arrive, and skip food in your bag since rangers search at the gate.

Krabi Town night market

The Krabi Walking Street takes over Soi Maharaj 8 behind the Vogue department store every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5pm to 10pm (market listing). Entry is free and food stalls make up most of the 50-odd pitches: southern curries, grilled seafood, roti and desserts in small portions made for grazing.

How do you get to Phi Phi from Krabi?

Ferries to Phi Phi leave from Klong Jilad pier, 3 to 4 km south of Krabi Town, and land at Tonsai pier on Phi Phi Don. The standard crossing takes about two hours and walk-up fares run about 450 to 600 baht one way, with morning and early-afternoon sailings year-round (2026 ferry times and prices). Shared speedboats cut the same route to 45 to 60 minutes for roughly 850 to 1,250 baht. Every arrival pays a 20 baht cash island-entry fee at Tonsai pier.

Staying in Ao Nang saves the backtrack: direct boats leave Nopparat Thara pier and cross in about an hour, typically a morning ferry plus afternoon speedboats. This service is seasonal and dependable from November to April, then thins or pauses when monsoon swell picks up, so confirm the sailing on the day. Such seasonal gaps are a good reason to keep a buffer day before any flight, since rough-sea days cancel boats at short notice.

What does a Krabi trip cost in 2026?

Krabi sits mid-range for Thailand: cheaper than Phuket, dearer than the north. Street meals run 60 to 120 baht, a sit-down dinner with seafood 250 to 500 baht, and mid-range hotels 1,000 to 2,500 baht a night in season.

Cash still rules the beach economy: longtail fares, songthaews, park fees and market stalls all want baht, while hotels and sit-down restaurants take cards. ATMs cluster in Ao Nang and Krabi Town but thin out fast on Railay, so withdraw before crossing.

When is the best time to visit Krabi?

November to April is the dry season and the window to build a boat-heavy trip around: calm Andaman seas, reliable longtail and ferry schedules, and the best chance your island day runs as booked. December to February is peak season with the highest hotel prices, so book four to six weeks ahead. March and April stay dry but turn hotter, with highs around 33C.

May to October is the southwest monsoon. Rain usually falls in short heavy afternoon bursts rather than all-day washouts, mornings often stay clear, and hotel prices drop 30 to 50 percent. The price is rougher seas: ferry frequency thins, some routes cancel, and jellyfish numbers rise near shore. September and October are the wettest months. If you travel then, keep one boat day flexible and hold an inland backup like the Tiger Cave Temple for storm days. Check the Thailand holidays guide too, since festival weeks fill hotels nationwide.

Krabi rewards a simple formula: Ao Nang as base, Railay by longtail, one island tour, one inland day, and Phi Phi if the seas allow. Once the boats are understood, the rest is easy. Pair it with Chiang Mai for cooler mountain days after the beach, and browse our other Thailand guides when you plan the next leg.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Krabi?

Four to five days covers Railay, one island tour such as the 4-islands trip, and an inland day at the Tiger Cave Temple and Emerald Pool. Three days works for Railay plus one tour only. Add two more days if you want a Phi Phi day trip or an overnight on the islands.

Where should I stay in Krabi for the first time?

Ao Nang suits most first visits: it has the widest choice of hotels and restaurants, and longtail boats to Railay plus every major island tour leave from there. Pick Railay for a short car-free beach stay with climbing and sunset views, or Krabi Town for cheaper rooms and the weekend night market if you do not mind riding to the boats.

How do you get to Railay Beach?

Only by boat. Limestone cliffs cut Railay off from the road network, so take a shared longtail from Ao Nang beach for 100 baht one way, about 10 to 15 minutes. Boats run roughly 8am to 6pm and leave once full with about eight passengers. After dark you must charter a private boat instead.

How much does the 4-islands tour cost?

In 2026 a shared longtail tour runs about 500 to 800 baht per person and a shared speedboat about 1,000 to 1,600 baht, usually with lunch, snorkelling gear and hotel pickup included. The Mu Ko Poda national park fee of about 400 baht per adult is paid separately in cash and is never part of the advertised price.

Can you visit Phi Phi as a day trip from Krabi?

Yes. Ferries leave Klong Jilad pier near Krabi Town and take about two hours, with fares around 450 to 600 baht one way. Direct boats from Ao Nang cross in about an hour in the November to April season. A day trip works, but an overnight on Phi Phi Don gives you Maya Bay early before the day boats arrive.

What is the best time of year to visit Krabi?

November to April brings dry weather and calm seas, which is what every boat trip depends on. December to February is peak season with the highest hotel prices, so book ahead. May to October is the monsoon season: cheaper rooms, short heavy downpours, rougher seas and occasional cancelled crossings.
