In this guide
Seven days in Mexico fits one great city and one great coast, joined by a 2-hour flight. Three nights in Mexico City cover the Zocalo, Chapultepec, Coyoacan and Teotihuacan. Three nights on the Riviera Maya cover Tulum, a cenote, Chichen Itza and an island beach day. This 7 days in Mexico itinerary gives the day-by-day plan and the transfers that carry it.
Key Takeaways
- Fly open jaw: into Mexico City, home from Cancun. Never backtrack.
- Days 1 to 3: Centro, Chapultepec plus Coyoacan, Teotihuacan plus Xochimilco.
- Days 4 to 7: Playa base, Tulum plus cenote, Chichen Itza plus Valladolid, Isla Mujeres.
- Book Frida tickets weeks ahead and the domestic flight with your international one.
- Mid-range couples spend roughly $1,000 to 1,500 per person excluding international flights.
How should you split 7 days across two regions?
| Days | Where | The point of the stop |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Mexico City | Zocalo, museums, Coyoacan, Teotihuacan |
| 4 | Fly and transfer | 2-hour flight, ADO to Playa, evening Quinta |
| 5 | Tulum | Clifftop ruins at opening, cenote swim |
| 6 | Chichen Itza | 8am entry, Ik Kil, Valladolid return |
| 7 | Isla Mujeres | Playa Norte morning, fly home |
The order is fixed: city first, beach last. Altitude, walking and early starts tire legs out, and the beach half recovers them. Reversing strands you with ruins after relaxation, which nobody enjoys. Read the Mexico City guide before days 1 to 3 and the Riviera Maya guide before days 4 to 7, since fares and hours there shape this plan.
Days 1 to 3: how do you do Mexico City at speed?
Day 1 stays light for the altitude. Land at 2,240 metres, ride Metrobús Line 4 or an authorised taxi into Roma or Condesa, drop bags, and walk the Centro: the Zocalo, the Cathedral exterior and Bellas Artes. Dinner near the hotel and an early night pay off all week.
Day 2 pairs the big museum with the blue house. The National Museum of Anthropology needs two morning hours minimum: Sun Stone, Aztec hall, Maya rooms. Then Metro or Uber south to Coyoacan for the Casa Azul. Timed Frida tickets sell out weeks ahead, so this day only works if you booked early. The Coyoacan market and plaza fill the gap between the two, with tostadas and agua fresca for pocket change.

The Casa Azul queue. Timed tickets sell out weeks ahead, so book before flights.
Day 3 runs pyramids plus canals. Teotihuacan buses leave the northern terminal early; climb the Sun pyramid before heat builds. Guides at the gate split well between groups. Back in the city by mid-afternoon, ride south to Xochimilco for a trajinera hour on the canals with snacks and mariachis. For dinner, work through the Roma taco crawl your legs have earned.
Day 4: how do you hop to the Caribbean?
Fly Mexico City to Cancun in about 2 hours, with departures across Aeromexico, Volaris and VivaAerobus (Mexico Travel and Leisure). Morning flights protect the day: land by lunch, clear the airport, and ride ADO south to Playa del Carmen. Check in, swim off the travel day, and walk Quinta Avenida after dark. Do not plan anything structural today. Flights slip, and the buffer absorbs it.
Pack a beach bag inside your carry-on. If checked bags lag in Cancun, day 5 still runs: ruins need only walking shoes, and cenotes rent gear. The travellers scrambling in resort shops are the ones who packed swimwear at the bottom of a through-checked case.

Day 5 is Tulum plus water. Playa to Tulum runs southbound, about an hour by ADO or colectivo. Enter the ruins at opening, walk the cliff path to El Castillo, descend to the cove, then swim Gran Cenote or Dos Ojos after lunch when the light shafts drop into the caves.

Inside Dos Ojos. Midday light reaches the cave water after a ruins morning.
Day 6 is Chichen Itza, and it starts before dawn. The site opens at 8am; the 8:30 ADO direct bus, an early tour pickup, or a rental car all target it. Entry costs 614 pesos for foreigners plus a state fee (Mexico Travel and Leisure). Walk El Castillo, the ball court and the warriors’ temple before the 11am wave, swim Ik Kil’s hanging-root cenote at midday, and stop in Valladolid for lunch and the San Servacio church. Back in Playa by evening.

Valladolid’s main church. The colonial town breaks the Chichen Itza return leg.
Day 7: how do you end on Isla Mujeres?
Ferry from Puerto Juarez, 25 minutes, and Playa Norte gives the calmest swim of the week with almost no sargassum. Golf carts rent by the hour for an island loop. For example, circle to Punta Sur for the cliff views, then return to Playa Norte for the afternoon swim. Late flights allow a full beach morning; early flights swap this day for a Playa beach plus a cenote. Eat seafood downtown before leaving: island lobster and ceviche cost half the Hotel Zone. Hold an afternoon ADO-plus-flight buffer to Cancun airport regardless.
What does the week cost?
| Item | Budget pp | Mid-range pp |
|---|---|---|
| Stay, 6 nights | 180 | 450 |
| Food and drink | 120 | 250 |
| City transport | 20 | 60 |
| Domestic flight | 80 | 140 |
| Tours and entries | 120 | 220 |
| Total | 520 | 1,120 |
City days run cheap: 5-peso Metro rides, market lunches and free plazas. The coast adds tour and entry costs: Chichen Itza, cenotes, the Cozumel-area ferry logic and park-style days. The MI card covers the capital’s whole network for pocket change (CDMX mobility guide), while Riviera buses and colectivos stay honest and cheap (Wikivoyage). Mid-range couples land near $1,000 to 1,500 per person for two, excluding international flights.
December to April brings dry days to both halves of the week. May and November cost less with small shower odds. Summer adds whale sharks and turtles to the coast but also seaweed and storms. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a light rain shell and walking shoes broken in before day one.
Keep day 7 unbooked until the sargassum forecast lands. A weedy week converts this day into Cozumel: same ferry logic from Playa, better reef, clearer west-coast water. Travellers who pre-book catamarans lose the swap; travellers who ferry themselves keep it.
Costs stay mid-range throughout: Mexico City days run on 5-peso Metro rides and market lunches, Riviera days on tours and park entries. Full price tables sit in the Cancun guide. Fares and tour times shift by season, so run a last fact check on operator pages before you lock days 5 to 7. The Mexico hub and the Americas collection hold the rest as they publish.

Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for Mexico?
Yes for one city plus one coast: 3 days in Mexico City and 4 on the Riviera Maya, joined by a 2-hour flight. It skips Oaxaca, which needs its own week. Book an open-jaw ticket, into Mexico City and home from Cancun.
Should you do Chichen Itza or Tulum with only one ruin day?
Chichen Itza for scale and wonder, Tulum for coast plus swim in one morning. This itinerary fits both by pairing Tulum with a cenote and giving Chichen Itza the early full day it needs.
How do you get from Mexico City to the Riviera Maya?
Fly. Mexico City to Cancun runs about 2 hours with multiple daily departures on Aeromexico, Volaris and VivaAerobus. Then ADO bus south to Playa del Carmen.
Do you need a rental car for this route?
No. Metro, Uber and walking cover Mexico City, and ADO buses plus tours cover the Riviera. A car only pays off for multi-cenote days around Tulum, and parking in Playa costs more than the colectivos you replace.
When should you book Frida and flights?
Frida Kahlo Museum tickets sell out weeks ahead, so book before your international flights. Lock the domestic flight early too: the whole week hinges on the day-4 hop, and late booking doubles it.
