In this guide
Ten days in Zanzibar is the first trip length that stops feeling like a schedule. Seven days covers the island at pace; ten covers it properly. The extra days buy the far south, a second reef day, a full sailing day and two afternoons where the plan says nothing. This 10 days in Zanzibar itinerary keeps three bases across the island: Stone Town for depth, the north coast for swimming, the east and south for lagoons and boats, timed with our guide to the best time to visit Zanzibar for dry-season seas.
Key Takeaways
- Three nights per base: Stone Town, Nungwi or Kendwa, Paje. Two moves, two half-days lost, three coasts gained.
- Days 1 to 3: old city, spice farm, Prison Island. Days 4 to 6: north beaches plus Mnemba twice. Days 7 to 9: Paje, Jozani, The Rock, Kizimkazi, Safari Blue.
- Two days stay deliberately empty. Protect them from excursion sellers.
- Buy the $44 Zanzibar insurance before flying. Budget $50 for the visa on arrival.
- Mid-range couples spend roughly $2,700 to $3,800 for two excluding international flights.
How do ten days change the trip?
| Days | Where | What the extra time buys |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Stone Town | Spice farm AND Prison Island, plus a free old-city morning |
| 4 to 6 | Nungwi or Kendwa | Mnemba twice, a Kendwa sunset, one slow beach day |
| 7 to 9 | Paje and the south | Jozani, The Rock, Kizimkazi dolphins, Safari Blue |
| 10 | Depart | Last swim, 60 minutes to the airport |
Against the 7-day classic, nothing is cut; everything gets air. The island is compact (Stone Town to Nungwi is 57 km, to Paje 49 km), so the ten-day gain is depth, not distance. One alternative worth naming: the safari-and-beach combo. That means four nights on the northern circuit plus five or six here, joined by a bush flight from roughly $350 to $480 per person (combo pricing). It suits first-and-only East Africa trips; this plan suits travellers who want the island itself. Wider routing lives in the itinerary collection with Africa behind it.
Days 1 to 3: what does slow Stone Town look like?
Day 1 arrives gently. Zanzibar Airport sits 5 km from town; the set-fare taxi runs about $15 and 15 minutes. Clear immigration with the $44 ZIC insurance certificate (mandatory since October 2024, bought before departure) and the $50 visa. Then walk the seafront: Old Fort, the House of Wonders exterior, Darajani Market, and Forodhani Gardens at dusk for charcoal-grilled seafood.
Day 2 is the spice farm, done properly. Farms at Kizimbani and Kidichi sit 20 to 30 minutes inland. Tours run two to three hours with guides who cut vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg fresh off the plant. Most end in fruit and a simple lunch, for $20 to $35 per person (hotel survey). The afternoon stays deliberately loose: carved-door lanes, a tea house at Jaws Corner, the slave-market memorial and cathedral quarter taken slowly rather than ticked.

Mixed planting on a spice shamba: banana, clove and vanilla grow layered together.
Day 3 boats to Prison Island (Changuu), 20 minutes off the waterfront. The Aldabra tortoise colony, several animals past a century old, carries the morning. Entry runs about $10 to $15 per person, with return boats $20 to $25. Swim off the island beach before returning. Evening two at Forodhani, which rewards a second visit once the first-night overwhelm fades.

Days 4 to 6: why visit the reef twice?
Day 4 transfers north, about 75 minutes to Nungwi, and the pattern from the shorter trip holds: tide-free swimming from the first afternoon, sunset dhow in the evening. Sleep Nungwi for choice or Kendwa, five minutes west, for calm and stronger sunsets.
Days 5 and 6 are the reef days, and the second visit is the point of the longer trip. Mnemba Atoll’s reserve holds coral gardens, green and hawksbill turtles, rays and dense reef fish 2.5 km off the north-east coast. Trips run about $50 to $70 per person and leave near 8am. The first day covers the headline sites. The second day, booked after you know the water, reaches the quieter outer sites and suits divers better. Certified dives can replace snorkel sessions on most boats (tour plan). A shamba is a small mixed farm: if the spice visit left you curious, day 6 ashore shows the same layered planting around the northern villages. Non-divers split day 6 instead: Kendwa beach morning, village lanes and dhow yards afternoon, no boat at all. For example, a slow morning on Kendwa sand followed by the working dhow yards on Nungwi’s eastern beach fills the day with zero bookings.

Small life on the Mnemba reef: divers spot porcelain crabs and nudibranchs between the coral heads.

Day 7 drives south-east with Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park folded in. The park protects 50 sq km of forest and mangrove boardwalk. Red colobus troops show near the trailhead most mornings. Entry costs about $10 to $15 with the ranger walk included, gates run 7:30am to 5pm (forest guide). Tour prices in this plan were checked against operator pages in September 2026. Confirm entry fees on arrival, since they move most. Arrive Paje by mid-afternoon for the high-tide swim, and check the week’s tide table at the hotel desk.
Day 8 pairs The Rock with nothing. Lunch sits at the Michamvi Pingwe outcrop restaurant. Walk out at low tide, boat back at high; mains run $25 to $45 and booking ahead is essential. Then the deliberately empty afternoon: read, swim the rising tide, eat grilled fish on the sand. This is the day seven-day travellers cut, and the one ten-day travellers remember.
Day 9 goes south early. Kizimkazi’s dolphin boats leave at 6 to 7am for the feeding window. Expect spinner and bottlenose pods in open water south of the island, roughly $30 to $50 per person. Back by late morning, the afternoon rests. Alternatively, spend day 9 on Safari Blue from Fumba in Menai Bay. Menai Bay is the island’s largest marine reserve: full-day dhow sailing, sandbank swims, snorkelling stops and a Kwale Island seafood barbecue. Compare operators before booking: some centre on bay sightseeing and conservation, others on dolphin swimming, and private charters combine both (first-timer account). Pack a hat, sunscreen and a swimsuit. The bay glare burns fast. Pick one. Doing both in a single day fits nobody.
Beach choice on this leg matters less than rhythm: Paje for cafés and kitesurf theatre, Jambiani ten minutes south for village quiet and lower bills, and our Paje beach guide covers tides, kite seasons and hotels for this leg. Our best beaches guide compares the two street by street, and food plus tips cover eating and practicalities.
Set an alarm for one east-coast sunrise. The sun rises straight out of the Indian Ocean in front of Paje and Bwejuu, and the lagoon sits glassy before the trade wind wakes. Most travellers sleep through every one of them, then fly home having seen the island’s best free show only in other people’s photos. One early morning is enough; the tide is usually high enough for a swim straight after.
Take the Safari Blue day only if the sea state suits. Menai Bay crossings turn choppy in strong Kusi wind (June to July afternoons especially), and operators run anyway. Ask your guesthouse for the morning marine report the evening before; if whitecaps show, swap Safari Blue to the next calm day and move the empty afternoon forward. Fixed-date sailing bookings cause more seasick honeymoons than any other Zanzibar decision.
What should you eat over ten days?
Ten days lets you eat in layers instead of rushing the hits. Stone Town covers the Swahili base: charcoal-grilled seafood and Zanzibar pizza at Forodhani, coconut rice and farm fruit at the spice lunch, rooftop fish grills on the last town night. The north adds beach dining rooms where the day’s catch sets the menu and prices run highest. Paje closes the trip cheapest: smoothie bowls at breakfast, wood-fired pizza midday, grilled fish on the sand at dusk. The Rock lunch is the week’s splurge, so keep the other Paje dinners simple. More dish detail sits in our food guides.
What does ten days cost?
The table below totals this 10 days in Zanzibar itinerary at two travel styles, per person excluding international flights. Carry US dollars in small, crisp post-2006 notes plus Tanzanian shillings: dollars cover the $50 visa, taxis and tours, while shillings suit markets and dalla-dallas. Draw cash in Stone Town before the beach days, since ATMs thin out along the coasts.
| Item | Budget pp | Mid-range pp |
|---|---|---|
| Stay, 9 nights | 270 | 700 |
| Food and drink | 210 | 430 |
| Transfers and taxis | 80 | 160 |
| Tours and entries | 170 | 330 |
| Insurance and visa | 94 | 94 |
| Total | 824 | 1,714 |
The mid-range column assumes old-town character hotels, beachfront rooms east and north, private transfers and every major excursion. That means the spice farm, Prison Island, Mnemba twice, Jozani, the dhow cruise, and dolphins or Safari Blue. Budget travellers using guesthouses, dalla-dallas and half the tours land near the left column. A mid-range couple totals roughly $2,700 to $3,800 for two excluding international flights. July, August and late December push the top; April and May pull toward the bottom. Tour and transfer prices below were checked against operator pages in September 2026. Confirm marine park fees on arrival, since they move most. Money detail sits in our budget guides, with island totals in our Zanzibar trip cost guide. Every companion piece for this 10 days in Zanzibar itinerary sits in the Zanzibar hub.

Frequently asked questions
Is 10 days too long for Zanzibar?
No, it is the first length that feels unhurried. Seven days covers the highlights at pace; ten adds a second reef day, the far south, a full sailing day and two empty beach days. Travellers who stay ten rarely call a day wasted.
Should you combine safari and Zanzibar in 10 days instead?
You can: four nights on the northern safari circuit plus five or six nights on Zanzibar, joined by a bush flight. It doubles the budget and halves the island time, so pick it for variety over depth. This plan covers the island-only version.
Where should you sleep on a 10-day Zanzibar trip?
Three bases: Stone Town for three nights, the north coast (Nungwi or Kendwa) for three, and Paje for three. Moving twice in ten days costs two half-days and buys three distinct coasts. A fourth base adds packing without adding much.
What is Safari Blue in Zanzibar?
A full-day dhow sailing in Menai Bay off the south-west coast: sandbank swimming, snorkelling, a seafood barbecue on Kwale Island and often dolphin sightings. Boats leave from Fumba, about 40 minutes from Stone Town, and return late afternoon.
How do you move between the three bases?
By private transfer or taxi booked the evening before through your hotel. Stone Town to Nungwi is 57 km and about 75 minutes, Stone Town to Paje is 49 km and about 45 minutes, and Nungwi to Paje direct takes about 90 minutes. Shared dalla-dalla minibuses cover the same routes for a few thousand shillings but take two to three hours with changes.
When is the best time for a 10-day Zanzibar itinerary?
June to October for dry days, calm northern seas and steady kite wind, or January to February for heat and calm water. Avoid April and May, when the long rains flood the Jozani boardwalk and rough seas cancel sailing days.
